A Visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Winter
Winter at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary has a charm all of its own; quieter paths, peaceful views over the river, and plenty of moments to meet the real stars: the rescued seals who call the place home.
Now that we’re Sanctuary Ambassadors (something we’re genuinely thrilled about), our guests get 15% off entry. So if you’re visiting us this season, here’s what to expect when you pop over to Gweek.
The pups
Winter is rescue season, which means you might spot the youngsters in the hospital pools. These little ones are often recovering from storms, injuries, or separation, and the team caring for them does seriously impressive work.
The residents
Not every seal can be released, which means there’s a small group who live at the Sanctuary full-time. Each one has a personality, from the cheeky troublemakers to the calm, curious types who will absolutely make eye contact with you like they’re starting a conversation.
Peaceful winter views
The Sanctuary sits right by the Helford River, and on a crisp winter day it’s gorgeous. There’s something lovely about wandering the paths when everything is quiet and still.
Warm-up moments
There are indoor viewing areas, hot drinks, and plenty of places to pause. So even if the weather is having a dramatic day (Cornwall, we love you but please…), you’ll stay comfortable.
Helpful tip:
It’s only a 20 minute walk or short drive from Kosel, so it fits perfectly into a gentle day out; morning in the woods, cute seals after lunch, back to the treehouse for a long soak in the tub.
Winter might be cold, but over at the Sanctuary, it’s full of life.
